It's less than two weeks since the first film in the series was released, but it's already almost time for Netflix's Fear Street trilogy to wrap up with its final chapter.

As with the first two films, the new movie is based on the work of prolific children's horror writer RL Stine, and it is once again set in the town of Shadyside, where – to put it lightly – nothing ever seems to go quite right.

But whereas the first film was set in 1994, and the second took us to 1978, the final instalment in the trilogy goes back much further in time – all the way to 1666.

Of course, if you've watched the first two entries in the series, you'll know that this year is significant as being during the life of Sarah Fier – the witch whose curse has doomed Shadyside to centuries of gloom – and so unsurprisingly this is the focus of the film.

Despite the significant backward time jump, the cast is largely made up of actors who appeared in the first films, but most of them are playing dual roles, including Kiana Madeira, who appears not only as the first film's protagonist Deena but also as Sarah Fier herself.

And now fans have been treated to a first look at the third film, which seems to have more of a folk horror vibe – featuring one or two questionable accents.

Fear Street Part 3 trailer

Similarly to the second film, the trailer for Fear Start Part 3: 1666 arrived just a couple of days before the debut of the new film, and it looks like this film is going to have a slightly different vibe from the other two, watch it below:

The first trailer for the second instalment was released just a few days before the film arrived – and teased more grisly events, this time against a 1970s summer camp setting. Check it out below:

Fear Street Part 1:1994 got its own trailer back in June 2021, featuring a retro '90s chatroom, a better look at the plot's supernatural elements and Maya Hawke yet again running into trouble in a mall.

The first Fear Street trailer for the trilogy was released in May 2021, before a second, longer trailer was released in June 2021 as part of Netflix's Geeked Week event – giving fans a better idea of the plot as well as some slasher scares.

Look out for an unexpected crossover with Castlevania, with one of the teens playing the classic '90s game:

Fear Street Part 3 cast

Whereas the Fear Street cast was largely very different in parts 1 and 2 (albeit with some overlap) most of the actors to appear in the third installment are familar faces from the earlier chapters.

And so Kiana Madeira, Ashley Zukerman, Gillian Jacobs, Sadie Sink, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Darrell Britt-Gibson, Fred Hechinger, Julia Rehwald and Emily Rudd all appear in the threequel – although intriguingly several of them appear to have dual roles.

What is RL Stine's Fear Street?

Often referred to as the Stephen King of children's literature, RL Stine is best known for the multi-million selling Goosebumps series, but has written plenty of other horror fiction novels - including the more teen-focused Fear Street books.

The Fear Street series began with the release of The New Girl in 1989, and would continue until 1999, with Stine then reviving the series in 2005 and 2014. Several spin-off series have been released including Fear Street Sagas and Ghosts of Fear Street, which combined have sold over 80 million copies.

The Fear Street books are set in the fictional city of Shadyside, and follow teenagers as they encounter hostile and occasionally paranormal adversaries. Much like the Goosebumps series, the characters usually change in each book, though some characters - in particular the titular Fear family - reappear or are mentioned in several novels.

However, unlike the preteen adventures of Goosebumps, Fear Street is aimed at a much older teenage audience - and thus the deaths are plentiful and often very, very gory...

After a failed television adaptation in the 1990s, Stine has now seen the Netflix trilogy - and hints that they could be even scarier than the books...

“Fear Street fans are in for a treat – and some major surprises,” Stine said. “Readers know that the book series is rated PG. But the movies are rated R. That means a lot more thrills – and a lot more terror!

“I have seen Leigh Janiak’s epic trilogy releasing on Netflix in July and I can tell you the scares and the SCREAMS are more than I ever expected. What fun to see the horrors of Shadyside come to life!”

Director Leigh Janiak has hinted that much like Stranger Things, Fear Street pays homage to classic films released during the '80s and '90s - though opted for decidedly more scary choices than Netflix's other nostalgic franchise.

"For 1994, Scream stood above all rest -- it's peak ’90s horror and, I think, one of the most brilliant movies ever made, period," said Janiak. "Then for 1978, I got to look at the heyday of slasher films — Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street. For 1666...I found the best inspiration for me lay in the beautiful world made rotten of Terence Malick's The New World."
